<p class="MsoNormal">Chocolate, roses, fancy dinners, and stuffed animals are the

<p class="MsoNormal">The legend of Groundhog Day tells us if this furry little creature
comes out of hibernation and sees his shadow there will be six more weeks of
winter. No shadow means an early spring. Spring brings to mind new life as
trees and flowers bloom and animals give birth to young. We hope for relief
from the bitterness of winter. But this observance is merely tradition. How
many times is the groundhog wrong? His shadow doesn’t represent the truth of the
season’s weather.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">The Old Testament provides us with multitudes of examples of
Israel’s failures to obey God. Despite warnings from prophets, the people
refused to turn away from false gods. When the leaders fell into sin, most of
the population followed. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Here are 3 lessons we can learn from Israel’s kings. If we
will read their history with open eyes we can learn from their examples and
avoid the same mistakes they made. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b>1. Disobedience Has a Price.<o:p></o:p></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><i>Now all these things happened to them as examples, and
they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come</i>
(1 Corinthians 10:11 NKJV)<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Saul took it upon himself to offer a sacrifice that only the
priests were allowed to do. He decided what to do rather than listening to the
Lord. Because of this disobedience the kingdom was torn away from his family
and given to another.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">David’s sin with Bathsheba is recorded in 2 Samuel chapter
11. He repented and God forgave him, but he paid a heavy price. The child Bathsheba
bore died, the sword never left David’s house, and his children lived in
turmoil. One of his sons raped a daughter of David and his son Absalom
attempted a coup against his father’s kingdom. But because of David’s repentant
heart, God made a promise that David’s descendant would always be on the
throne.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Solomon started out right. He was the wisest man who ever
lived. He penned hundreds of proverbs and songs and his wisdom was known
throughout the world. Yet because of his marriage to multiple women from
heathen countries, his heart was turned away from God and toward the idols of
his wives (which God forbade His people to do for this reason). God preserved
one tribe because of his promise to David but the remaining tribes were torn
from Solomon’s line and after his death given to his servant Jeroboam. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">And the most famous evil king of Israel was Ahab. He brought
the worship of Baal to Israel after he married Jezebel. He wouldn’t listen to the
prophet Elijah’s warnings. He died in battle and the dogs licked his blood from
the chariot where he fell.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b>2. Advice From Ungodly People Can Draw Us Away From God.<o:p></o:p></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><i><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Do not be
unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has
righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?</i>
(2 Corinthians 6:14).</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrSQYB8N8bjAB1NZvYagG05haeFMAlw9fmuouCmlX_7B2EKLeMxaVgrfvl6VsKcHnEEFRQ8qw-duzUnHWGWBI2IG_kk9K3SDHvrWpc5Ujsa1SKp08k8uRsRrXdOpEnykHqAOn6YhgadNcfH4d69EDTjwguKKPV7PO7FsqhiNR-FNZsPxzzDPQSTrWWPJ8/s1500/Learn%20from%20the%20Bible.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1500" data-original-width="750" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrSQYB8N8bjAB1NZvYagG05haeFMAlw9fmuouCmlX_7B2EKLeMxaVgrfvl6VsKcHnEEFRQ8qw-duzUnHWGWBI2IG_kk9K3SDHvrWpc5Ujsa1SKp08k8uRsRrXdOpEnykHqAOn6YhgadNcfH4d69EDTjwguKKPV7PO7FsqhiNR-FNZsPxzzDPQSTrWWPJ8/w320-h640/Learn%20from%20the%20Bible.png" width="320" /></a></div><br /><o:p></o:p><p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Solomon’s son Rehoboam reigned in Judah after his father’s
death. He rejected the counsel of the elders who had advised Solomon and
instead he listened to his friends. He fell to peer pressure. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Asa did what was right in the eyes of the Lord but later
relied on the king of Syria instead of the Lord. He was diseased in his feet
the rest of his life. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, walked in the ways of David but he
did not take away the high places of false worship. He later allied himself
with the evil king of Israel, Ahaziah, to make ships to go to Tarshish.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Because of this the ships they made were
wrecked. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">When Joash became king of Judah he did what was right in the
eyes of the Lord. Yet when Jehoiada the priest died, Joash listened to the
leaders of Judah and they bowed down to worship wooden idols. After years of
the kindness of Jehoiada into Joash’s life, Joash still killed that prophet’s
son. Because of this act, judgment was executed against Joash and his own
servants conspired against him and killed him. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b>3. A Divided Heart Will Make Us Unstable.<o:p></o:p></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><i>That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and
fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men and
cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive. </i>(Ephesians 4:14-15
AKJV)<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">In 2 Kings 10 Jehu destroyed the worshippers of Baal yet in
verse 31 it says, <i>But Jehu took no heed to walk in the law of the Lord God
of Israel with all his heart; for he did not depart from the sins of Jeroboam,
who had made Israel sin.<o:p></o:p></i></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Jehu destroyed the elements of Baal but did not totally
dedicate himself to the Lord. He had a divided heart and a divided heart will
make us <i>unstable in all our ways</i> (James 1:8).<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">We live under a new covenant and we are not judged for sin
the way these Old Testament kings were. But there is still a consequence to sin
and the lessons the lives of these kings left behind can show us what happens
when we abandon God and go our own way.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">We can be thankful for God’s mercy and forgiveness, but we
can spare ourselves so much pain and heartache if we will follow His ways to
begin with. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b>What have you observed about the lives of these kings?

<p class="MsoNormal">As we enter a new year our thoughts are on new ways to set
goals or start resolutions.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">But we can also be tempted to look behind us and allow any
despair, heartbreak, or loss from last year to overwhelm us. Our soulish health depends upon
changing our focus. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The only reason we should look in the rearview mirror is to
learn from mistakes. We don’t need to stay in the pain of the past. God doesn’t
want us living in regret.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">We can anticipate the future with hope when we focus on the
love Christ has for us and that He gives our lives significance.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b>The best way we can start this year is to know we matter
to God. <o:p></o:p></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">We can learn how important an individual life is when we read
the story of the Samaritan woman (John 4:1-25).<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Jesus left Judea to go to Galilee. In that day, Jews did not
travel through Samaria. They would take the longer way around to avoid putting
their feet on the soil of a despised race. Except for Jesus.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The Scripture tells us that Jesus “needed” to go through
Samaria. He knew a woman with a broken heart and a spiritual thirst would be
there. A woman who felt insignificant. A woman who didn’t matter to society. A
woman who felt alone and isolated. A woman who sought love but remained empty.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b>She may not have mattered to anyone else, but she
mattered to the Son of God. She mattered so much He changed His route just to
be where she was. <o:p></o:p></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The Messiah ministered to this woman’s soul and healed her
hurts by accepting her despite her sin and failures. His words changed her
destiny. <b>He broke religious tradition and racial prejudice because she was
important. He showed her what true love was all about. <o:p></o:p></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Do you ever feel the same way this woman did? Do you feel
lost in the billions of people in the world as if you don’t matter?<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The Savior speaks to us as individuals. He is not willing
that any should perish (2 Peter 3:9). We matter so much He died in the place of
each of us.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b>He meets us where we are like He did with the Samaritan
woman. You matter. I matter. He gives each life significance. He wants our
fellowship. He wants us to let Him love us. <o:p></o:p></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">We can start the new year by accepting Christ’s love and
letting Him show us how important we are to Him. Please know you matter to God.
<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><i><span style="color: #1f3864; mso-themecolor: accent1; mso-themeshade: 128;">This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one
and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not
that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning
sacrifice for our sins.</span></i><span style="color: #1f3864; mso-themecolor: accent1; mso-themeshade: 128;"> </span><span style="color: #002060;">(1 John 4:9-10

<p class="MsoNormal">Marilyn Nutter experienced some of the worst pain a person
can feel when she lost her husband.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">She knows the isolation, despair, and hopelessness that can
go through a woman’s mind when her life’s mate is taken away. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Based on the ordeal of her loss and her growth through the
healing process, Marilyn wrote <i>Hope for Widows</i> to encourage women as
they go through the cycles of grief.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">You may not have gone through this life-altering circumstance
yourself but you probably know a woman who has. What better way to give her an
emotional boost than with a prescription for healing? <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">We can lift a friend or loved one out of despair by making
sure she is not alone in her grief. Yes, we do sometimes need our alone time to
be with God, pray, and read the Word. But we don’t want to forget about those
who grieve. Months or weeks down the road, we should keep these women on our
prayer list and find ways to encourage.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The important thing to remember is that we want our loved
ones to know they are not forgotten.<o:p></o:p></p>

released. This one, by Julie Lavender, is a devotional for moms of all ages.
Moms of toddlers to adult kids will be able to identify with these devotions.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Reading these short stories has resonated with me. <b>Julie has
the ability to connect with us on a personal level because as the mother of
four children, she knows what our days can be like.</b><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7mT5kCp71h9p9Cv8HLGbp4uET9LxiyMJ18nPMH4lGdESaIwgDiF6L-trlNg_GRVbVnt6kgqhtiyGufEmGrygKHtx5yRiUsmfMUjDD2vCKICi_SrZSVFsmLn6TsxzhjpxJ6CHT-IZ4QObgzbu8DiNTZMWq60fvPYqBnhOeUpyqVEq5RbD3Q89dZ79JwVQ/s445/Strength%20for%20all%20Seasons.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="445" data-original-width="334" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7mT5kCp71h9p9Cv8HLGbp4uET9LxiyMJ18nPMH4lGdESaIwgDiF6L-trlNg_GRVbVnt6kgqhtiyGufEmGrygKHtx5yRiUsmfMUjDD2vCKICi_SrZSVFsmLn6TsxzhjpxJ6CHT-IZ4QObgzbu8DiNTZMWq60fvPYqBnhOeUpyqVEq5RbD3Q89dZ79JwVQ/s320/Strength%20for%20all%20Seasons.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>There are 52 devotions, one for each week of the year. They
are short enough to read in a few minutes but they pack a punch and can help
anyone, whether a mom or not, with the daily challenges we face.<o:p></o:p><p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">As parents, we can be attacked with the plague of regret
over mistakes we make while raising our children. One chapter of <i><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Strength-All-Seasons-Devotional-Powerful/dp/0593690230/ref" target="_blank">Strength for All Seasons</a></i> focuses on encouraging us to look forward instead of living
in regret. We have all been there. We can gain encouragement from biblical characters who made mistakes. God
always redeemed those failures for His glory. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Julie tells us, “Instead of dwelling on our past mistakes,
God wants us to look ahead at what great things are to come. Paul the former
persecutor of new Christians, said, in Philippians 3:13 (NIV), ‘But one thing I
do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead.’ God has good
things planned for us. Let’s leave regrets in the past where they belong.”<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">We sometimes look at other moms and dads and think they are
perfect, at least more perfect than we are. I experienced this when my boys
were growing up. When I homeschooled them, in my mind the other kids fared
better than mine and their parents were better teachers. When my sons attended
public school, my thoughts played other games with me for different reasons. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">God doesn’t want us to compare ourselves to others whether
in parenting or other issues of life. We need to look to Christ for our
identity and only use Him as the standard for our lives. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b>We can be successful parents when we look to Christ and live
according to His character. <o:p></o:p></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b>I know you will enjoy reading this book which is available
on Amazon. Don’t forget Christmas is coming and this would make a wonderful gift
for a mom.</b><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Join the conversation and share your thoughts. <o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">I could say, “Have you ever been afraid?,” but that would be
a silly question. Of course, we have all faced fear at some time in our lives.
A germ spread panic around the world three years ago. Weather reports or
hurricane warnings can instill terror for those in coastal regions as we see
more storms forming in the ocean. Terrorism, crime, and rising prices can keep
us wrapped in knots of anxiety. <o:p></o:p></p>

deeper peek at Debbie Wilson’s new book, <i>Little Strength, Big God.</i> I
interviewed Debbie to learn more about how God’s strength has upheld
her and what she learned from the biblical characters she studied for this
book. I know you will be inspired by her answers. <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Little-Strength-Big-God-Discover/dp/1684263522/ref" target="_blank">Little Strength, Big God released</a> on

a little bit about your background for those who may not know you yet? How did
you get started in Christian ministry? <br />
<br />
<b>Debbie:</b> In college I sensed God’s call to join Campus Crusade for Christ
(now Cru). I was sure our perfect God had made His first mistake because I had
no interest or experience in ministry. But I obeyed and loved it. I met and
married my husband Larry while on staff. <br />
<br />
Seeing how many of our students’ struggles traced back to their families, we
became interested in counseling and left staff to move across the country for
two years of counselor training. From there we moved to North Carolina to set
up a Christian nonprofit counseling ministry.</span></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: x-large;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE0Wd32iusWyPi95oP3saGtN7Q7uH-EhKdxt5U4qRiJVywkvYDsI3N3zN7M1WLv483A-cOf8d_WdMeBY9W-Z9--wPj7xWxZCRVmba5VdTmM23Kisq2ZRmu_9m_5Cq8J4fv9bCDE0RN_KwuDNICD_mCisfEyJSgSvRJ0Er0wn6aKLZqiDoyx9p8mTaI8jA/s1340/Dark%20backdrops%20showcase%20diamonds%20and%20faith.png" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="907" data-original-width="1340" height="434" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE0Wd32iusWyPi95oP3saGtN7Q7uH-EhKdxt5U4qRiJVywkvYDsI3N3zN7M1WLv483A-cOf8d_WdMeBY9W-Z9--wPj7xWxZCRVmba5VdTmM23Kisq2ZRmu_9m_5Cq8J4fv9bCDE0RN_KwuDNICD_mCisfEyJSgSvRJ0Er0wn6aKLZqiDoyx9p8mTaI8jA/w640-h434/Dark%20backdrops%20showcase%20diamonds%20and%20faith.png" width="640" /></a></span></div><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: x-large;"><br /><o:p></o:p></span><p></p>
<p class="MsoListParagraph"><span style="font-family: arial;"><span style="line-height: 107%;"><o:p><span style="font-size: x-large;"> </span></o:p></span><b style="font-size: xx-large;"><span style="line-height: 107%;">Barbara: </span></b><span style="font-size: large; line-height: 107%;">This
quote from the book really stood out to me. “The many military examples in
Hebrews 12 remind us life is a battleground, not a playground.” You gave us
several examples in <i>Little Strength, Big God</i> of some of your battles and
how God came through for you. Would you share one of those for the readers of
this blog?</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: x-large;"><b><span style="line-height: 107%;">Debbie: </span></b><span style="line-height: 107%;">My most recent
battle involves my health. In 2015 an exposure to mold set off a health crisis.
I spent the morning of my scheduled launch party at Barnes and Noble in 2016 for
my book <i>Little Women, Big God</i> at the oncologist. Thankfully, surgery
showed my mass was benign, and my worst mold issues eventually lessoned after
some health interventions. But last November Covid resurrected some prior symptoms
and left me with debilitating exhaustion.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span><br />
<br />
As I’ve dealt with little strength, I remind myself that God only wants my
obedience. He has enough strength for both of us. Since it seems I must live
the title of my books, I’m thinking of writing <i>Europe’s Best Gardens and
Gelatos</i>!<br style="mso-special-character: line-break;" />
<!--[if !supportLineBreakNewLine]--><br style="mso-special-character: line-break;" />
<!--[endif]--><o:p></o:p></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: x-large;"><b><span style="line-height: 107%;">Barbara:</span></b><span style="line-height: 107%;"> Has getting to
know these biblical characters in a deeper way changed you in ways you wouldn’t
have anticipated?<br />
<br />
<b>Debbie:</b> Yes. They have helped me enjoy God’s grace in my life. God
remembers His children’s faith, not their flaws. This helps me be more gracious
to myself and to others. I’ve also seen the importance of taking the small step
God sets before me without having to figure out what comes next. My part is
obedience. God takes responsibility for the rest.<o:p></o:p></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoListParagraph"><span style="line-height: 107%;"><o:p><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: x-large;"> </span></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: x-large;"><b><span style="line-height: 107%;">Barbara:</span></b><span style="line-height: 107%;"> Here is another
quote that resonated with me. “Dark backdrops showcase diamonds and faith.” How
would you explain this insight to someone who didn’t yet know Christ if they
were afraid of trusting Him because they might be persecuted?<o:p></o:p></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoListParagraph"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: x-large;"><span style="line-height: 107%;"><o:p> </o:p></span><b><span style="line-height: 107%;">Debbie:</span></b><span style="line-height: 107%;"> Some of the worst
scenes in our story provide the best set-ups for God’s glory. Even in secular
stories, without hard times there would be no heroes. Think, <i>The Hiding
Place</i>, <i>Lord of the Rings,</i> and <i>Brave</i> <i>Heart</i>.</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="line-height: 107%;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: x-large;">This life is but a vapor. Ecclesiastes 3:11 says God
has put eternity into our hearts. I think we intuitively know there is
something bigger and greater than a human lifespan. Knowing Jesus fills the
hole in our hearts and gives us spiritual discernment to value eternal glory
over temporal tinsel or ease. <br style="mso-special-character: line-break;" />
<!--[if !supportLineBreakNewLine]--><br style="mso-special-character: line-break;" />

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: x-large;"><b><span style="line-height: 107%;">Barbara:</span></b><span style="line-height: 107%;"> Do you have ideas
for more books in the <i>Big God</i> series?<br />
<br />
<b>Debbie:</b> I have some topics in mind, but I’m not sure they will go into
the Big God umbrella. I would love to dig deeper into Joseph and Daniel. Both
men inspire me. <o:p></o:p></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="line-height: 107%;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: x-large;">Barbara, thank you so much for having me today. <o:p></o:p></span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="line-height: 107%;"><b><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: x-large;">Join the conversation and share your thoughts about how God's strength upholds you.</span></b></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="line-height: 107%;"><b><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: x-large;"> </span></b></span></p>

Lord’s gift of favor and mercy given to us for salvation because of the

power over the enemy of our souls because of what Jesus did at the cross. We
accept His finished work by faith not by something we do (Ephesians 2:8).<o:p></o:p></span></p>
