The young man
searched for the Teacher he heard so much about. As he approached a group of
men coming down the road, the man dismounted from his horse and handed the
reins to the servant who accompanied him.
Sunshine glimmered against the rings
on his fingers and the finest silks of faraway lands covered his body. Even his
animal was decked out in the splendor that reflected the wealth of its owner.
He ran to kneel
in front of the One who had the answers he sought. The young traveler
questioned the Teacher about eternal life, but he didn’t like the answer he
received.
The rich, young ruler who came to Jesus said he had kept the Law since his youth. That
statement itself revealed his lie. No one could keep it except the perfect One.
When Jesus told
the youth to sell all he had, then follow the Lord, the seeking man left
saddened. His actions revealed he had other gods instead of the Lord God
Jehovah—his wealth. He broke the first commandment and by breaking some, he
broke all.
