God's Roadmap

Now may the Lord Jesus Christ and our Father God, who loved us and in his wonderful grace gave us eternal comfort and a beautiful hope that cannot fail, encourage your hearts and inspire you with strength to always do and speak what is good and beautiful in his eyes (2 Thessalonians 2:16-17 TPT).

5 Scriptures to Combat Foreboding Thoughts

by Barbara Latta

The world is full of chaos because the ruler of this world is Satan. His agenda is destruction, and his methods of operation are lies and deceit. His whispered words plant fear.

With more apprehension filling the airwaves each day, our peace can be threatened if we allow these assumptions and predictions to take precedence in our lives.

Trepidation and threats shatter peace and can leave our emotions in sharp pieces. We can find ourselves descending into a deep hole of depression one step at a time and not realize we are at the bottom until we feel enveloped in darkness.

To combat fear, we must feed on faith (Romans 10:17). We turn off the negative TV reports and stop intentionally pouring apprehension-based thoughts into our minds. God’s voice brings life but only if hear Him. We will believe and act on what we listen to the most.

If we listen to the wrong voice, fear can take over. The remedy is to replace the voices that reverberate around us with the peaceful sound of God’s Word.

The Bible is our antidote for everything that attacks us. Here are 5 Scriptures to combat our most common feelings of foreboding and how the Word’s soothing balm can calm us with truth.

1. Depression Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; For I shall yet praise Him. The help of my countenance and my God (Psalm 43:5 NKVJ).

2. Lack of ProvisionTherefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? (Matthew 6:25)

3. Protection from HarmYou shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day, nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday. (Psalm 91:5)

4. The End of the WorldNow when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near. (Luke 21:28)

5. Anxious ThoughtsBe anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7)

As the time for Jesus’ return draws closer, the world grows darker, but the Holy Spirit’s influence  reveals grace is greater (Romans 5:20). Our remedy is to follow Romans 12:1-2 and renew our minds according to God’s thoughts and words and to not allow our attitudes to be determined by worldly values (Colossians 2:8).

We have life eternal to look forward to. God has us in His loving hands. It does take some discipline on our part to switch the channel on the words that drift around us. But we know when we trust our loving heavenly Father, we win. We can take those thoughts and pull them down before they grow into strongholds.

For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5 NKJV).

What are some additional Scriptures you can share to help us combat fear?

  2. Amen! I especially loved this phrase Ms. Barbara, "God’s voice brings life but only if hear Him." How very true ma'am. I see many today pushing back on the world, but few are replacing it with God's Word. When we create a vacuum, we must fill it with the right stuff or contaminants will take control and corrupt all that we attempt to fill our souls with later.

    1. You made an insightful observation, J.D. Too many people aren't pushing back by depending upon the Lord. There is a vacuum without Him. The bad stuff will take over if we are not filled up with God. Thanks for sharing. Blessings!

  5. As someone who has listened to the "wrong voice" more than once, I appreciate your message, Barbara. The wrong voice was the loudest voice because I ignored God and let my pride and willfulness put the wrong voice to the forefront. I'm so grateful for God's mercy, grace, and unfailing love. Thank you for sharing these words of assurance.
