God's Roadmap

Now may the Lord Jesus Christ and our Father God, who loved us and in his wonderful grace gave us eternal comfort and a beautiful hope that cannot fail, encourage your hearts and inspire you with strength to always do and speak what is good and beautiful in his eyes (2 Thessalonians 2:16-17 TPT).

7 Cures for Insomnia

by Barbara Latta

The lights are out. The house is quiet.

Yet sleep evades us.

The mind wanders and finds things we hadn’t even thought about for years or invents possibilities that haven’t happened yet.

There are some physical things we can do that will relax our bodies such as limit screen time, avoid foods that disagree with our stomachs, and stay away from violent movies and TV shows that raise emotional responses.

But the minute the room is dark and the TV is off, even if all these physical requirements are followed, thoughts of disaster still race through the space of our brains like a rocket on a mission to the moon.

God is our Creator, and He knows more about us and our internal workings than we do. The most experienced and educated professional cannot bring peace and calmness to an agitated soul. Yes, doctors can prescribe medications, but pills only treat symptoms with temporary results and can create unpleasant side effect.

If we want to be cured of insomnia, we need to let the Lord rid us of the source—and that is worry and stress.

Here are 7 cures for insomnia that we can use as medication for a sleepless night. When these are applied correctly, (meaning meditate on His words and not fearful thoughts,) God guarantees we will have refreshing rest.

  1. Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? (Matthew 6:25 NKJV)
  2. I lay down and slept; I awoke, for the Lord sustained me. (Psalm 3:5)
  3. I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; For You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety. (Psalm 4:8)
  4. You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You. (Isaiah 26:3)
  5. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7)
  6. Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. (1 Peter 5:7)
  7. Therefore there is now no condemnation [no guilty verdict, no punishment] for those who are in Christ Jesus [who believe in Him as personal Lord and Savior]. For the law of the Spirit of life [which is] in Christ Jesus [the law of our new being] has set you free from the law of sin and of death. (Romans 8:1-2 AMP)

Meditate on how much you are loved. If guilt and condemnation plague your thoughts, dwell on these Scriptures and find others that promise that believers are not under condemnation. Jesus took all our guilt and sin has been washed away. There is no reason to live in the land of regret.

God will meet our needs when we trust Him to do so.

In the model prayer that Jesus taught His disciples with, He prayed “Give us this day our daily bread”. He provides daily. We don’t need next weeks or next year’s provision, we only need to know that we have what we need at the time we need it.

Our identity in Christ makes us children of our heavenly Father and gives us access to His throne.

When we lay our burdens at the foot of the cross, we can rest in peace. Thoughts that attack us no matter what time of day, can be eliminated if we replace them with what God says about us and to us.

What Scriptures can you add to this list? Join the conversation.

  1. For me, I think coming clean with God before I call it a night is the best medicine I know of for a good night's sleep. Some great suggestions Ms. Barbara. Thank you ma'am. All of us have these nights now and again; it's how we remind ourselves that we are still in this world.

  3. These are great verses to call on hen insomnia strikes. Another one I like is Zep. 3:17: "The Lord your God...will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing (ESV).

  5. I'm usually so exhausted in the evenings, I fall asleep quickly. However, on the rare nights that I am wakeful, I pray or recite scripture that I've memorized previously. Sleep is essential for our good health. Thank you for focusing on this topic. Sweet dreams! (as my mother used to say)

  7. How fitting since last night was "one of those nights." I accidentally caused some damage to someone else's stuff and it made me feel so bad. Wish there was an undo button. This reminded me that my identity isn't defined by my oopsies and that God will help redeem even yucky things.

    1. Oh yes "those nights" can do that to us. Our minds can replay events faster than Superman can fly. You are right we are not defined by our oopsies. Thanks for sharing Barb. Blessings!

  8. These are good verses to meditate upon, Barbara. I rarely have trouble falling asleep, but I will either sing a simple song of praise or pray.

  9. Great advice, Barbara. I suffer with insomnia sometimes and practice many of your suggestions. I'm taking them to heart. Thank you.
Each night when I'm settled on my pillow, I softly say, "Thank You, Father."
Sometimes I don't feel very thankful and it's surprising how helpful it is to say that and mean it.

    1. Connie, it is amazing the results we can receive just by being thankful. Paul told us to rejoice always and he is one person who experienced situations that he didn't feel like being grateful in the middle of. We can be thankful we are loved no matter what. Thanks for sharing. Blessings!
