God's Roadmap

Now may the Lord Jesus Christ and our Father God, who loved us and in his wonderful grace gave us eternal comfort and a beautiful hope that cannot fail, encourage your hearts and inspire you with strength to always do and speak what is good and beautiful in his eyes (2 Thessalonians 2:16-17 TPT).

Do You Ever Feel Unworthy to Ask For God’s Help?

by Barbara Latta @barbaralatta

What happens when we fail but we feel unworthy to ask for God’s help?

The Lord may have rescued us, but we fell into the same repeated behavior.

We can then feel guilty for asking for deliverance again.

We feel unworthy, condemned, and disappointed in ourselves.

What we did may not be one of the “big sins.” What plagues us could be a bad decision, a lousy attitude, or lack of diligence. The Bible says anything that is not of faith is sin (Romans 14:23). Ouch. That doesn’t bring encouragement, does it?

But guess what? We, as believers, have been cleansed from sin by the blood of Jesus. We are made righteous in the sight of God. Whatever we did in the past, the present, or will do in the future is covered by His sacrifice (Hebrews 9:26). It is up to us to accept and apply this forgiveness to our lives.

Our heavenly Father’s compassions fail not. They are new every morning (Lamentations 3:23).

No matter what our sin is or has been, His grace is greater than our sin.

But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more (Romans 5:20b NKJV)

Our thoughts can play mind games against us. Satan can use how we express our attitudes as a weapon to accuse us.

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit (Romans 8:1)

You may read the last part of that verse and think, like I have before, that it doesn’t apply to you because you have been walking in the flesh. Your reasoning tells you that you are condemned.

Our condemnation comes from our conscience, not the Father. 1 John 3:20–21 tells us that it’s our heart that condemns us; and God is greater than our heart.

For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God. (1 John 3:20–21)

We can have confidence in the Lord that no matter what we have done, as His children, His grace is greater.

Let’s look at the story of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11–32). He demanded something from his father that he didn’t have the right to have at that time. His inheritance was reserved for when the father died. But the love of the Father gave it to him anyway. He spent all his money on sinful living. He returned home expecting to be treated like a servant, but instead was welcomed with a ring, a robe, and the fatted calf.

This is our heavenly Father. Looking for us all the time. Ready to embrace us and not remind us of what we have done wrong. Instead His love can show us how to live in victory and not condemnation.

The more revelation we have of God’s grace through Christ, the more we will not want to sin. And when we do, we can immediately know we are forgiven and we can approach His throne boldly (Hebrews 4:16). We don’t run from Him, we run to Him.

In ourselves, we aren’t worthy. But in Christ, He has made us worthy (Colossians 1:12–14).

  1. "His grace is greater than our sin" is a powerful thought to keep ready when we fail. His grace is an umbrella for us not only to cover sin but to enable us to handle hard tasks and live in challenging moments. All is grace..

  2. This couldn't have come at a better time. I returned home from the grocery store ashamed of my impatient attitude toward the young clerk when he forgot to scan my coupons. I rolled my eyes as I move to the customer service desk for a correction.

Though I tried to justify my behavior internally, I knew I was in the wrong. A chance to display God's kindness and patience gone forever. I can only hope the way I feel now, unworthy and ashamed, will spur me to do better next time. Forgive me, Father. I'm truly sorry.

    1. Candyce, you could be repeating me as I get frustrated at the self checkout at the store. Then the clerk has to come correct it and I'm not always patient with my comments. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Blessings!
