When God sent His Son to earth to redeem mankind from sin,
He sent His heart.
Because Jesus is the image of the Father.
Our finite human minds cannot comprehend the love of God
because our love is usually conditional unless we are truly letting the Spirit
of God shine through.
The rock in the picture was found by my mother. As she and
my dad were walking one day, the heart shape caught her eye, so she kept that
rock as a reminder of the love she and my dad had. It stayed on their fireplace
mantle until she died, and I kept it as a reminder of her.
But this heart-shaped rock also reminds me of 5
characteristics displayed by the heart of God.
He is:
He is:
- The Rock of our Salvation: He shall cry to Me, ‘You are my Father, My God, and the rock of my salvation’ (Psalm 89: 26). Like this rock, He is solid and firm.
- The Cornerstone: This is the stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone (Acts 4:11). He is the foundation we build our faith upon.
- The Rock of Ages: Trust in the Lord forever, for in God the Lord, we have an everlasting rock (Isaiah 26:4 NASB). He never changes.
- The Rock of Strength and Protection: For you are my rock and my fortress; therefore, for Your name’s sake, lead me and guide me (Psalm 31:3). His solidness protects us.
- The Rock of Truth: For I proclaim the name of the Lord; ascribe greatness to our God. He is the Rock, His work is perfect; for all His ways are justice, a God of truth and without injustice; righteous and upright is He (Deuteronomy 32: 3-4). His heart will not lie or be unfair.
God gave the ultimate gift to us because His heart wanted to
reach out to us. Love like no other. His love on the cross was for all mankind.
While we have heard that before, do we really comprehend the depth? Jesus died
for Hitler, Saddam Hussein, Idi Amin, Pol Pot, Josef Stalin, Karl Marx and all
the other despots we can think of.
It’s easy to separate ourselves from these dictators and
their cruel crimes because we haven’t done what they did. But without Christ,
the human nature is capable of anything. Those of us who have grown up in
church needed Christ as much as the most heinous criminal we can think of.
This heart rock is precious to me; not only because my
mother found it, but because I can look at it and think of the unchanging love
of God which stands for me like a rock.
If you don’t know this love, all you need to do is believe
on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved (Acts 16:31).
Happy Valentine’s Day from your heavenly Father!
For who is God, except the Lord? And who is a rock, except
our God? Psalm 18:31
